So This is the Year of the Tablet
What I don’t get is why companies are so intent on shoving full-fledged OS’s onto portable devices. I really don’t have much against Windows, but its seems like folly to put Windows (old or new) or Linux on a device that really needs an OS focused on that device’s strengths. Adding an extra UI layer to take advantage of the unique features of a tablet only imposes more work on less powerful processors. I’m not suggesting that Apple did everything right, but choosing to craft an OS for the iPhone/Touch (and speculatively, their upcoming tablet) seems to me a much better idea. Since we’re already seeing a strange market saturation from CES without being able to purchase any of these items, I predict that a year from now we’ll be talking about the failure of the Tablet craze, especially if no company can bring theirs in under $499.
